The pivot on which this ingenious idea revolves is from the thirst to meet necessity. It is said that necessity is the mother of invention.  The artist Austin Kleon once advised his students, “Draw the art you want to see, play the music you want to hear, write the books you want to read, build the products you want to use.”

The World Scholar’s Cup, was designed with one thing in mind: to have a program that will appeal to students during their primary and high school period.

Unlike many activities, World Scholar’s Cup may look like a competition, but isn’t one at all. It’s a celebration of learning. It brings together many subjects, because before we can begin to specialize, we need to see the big picture. It challenges teams to work together, because there’s nothing harder or more inspiring than knowing that someone else depends on you. And it deals with serious global issues without taking itself too seriously, because the conviction is that before we can fall in love with learning, we have to find the fun in learning.

Light International School Mombasa has hosted this event for two consecutive years; 2019 and 2020, each year proving to be unique. The plan is to make the local round even bigger!

From the local rounds, participants qualify for Global rounds which are held at different places in the world with culmination at the Tournament of Champions at Yale University.

Participants take part in the following areas: Collaborative Writing, Scholar’s challenge, Team Debates and Scholar’s bowl. It is always an opportunity to find fun in reading and learning.
